Setting up an internet radio station is a pain… but can be rewarding as well! As I embarked on this mission last month, I used a streaming radio service I found on Facebook. It worked ok in the beginning because I was able to upload all my audio files and it would randomly choose a file and play it. This was called AutoDJ, but when I wanted to add some structure to what was playing, my DJ software, RadioDJ, wouldn’t stay connected. Soooo, that was a waste of $29 for the month of November. I decided to run my own Icecast v2 server, and after setting that up, I had my station online within minutes.
The next hurdle was getting a player to work in this website. The fact that today’s modern browsers don’t allow mixing HTTPS and non-HTTPS assets required me to setup the Icecast server using SSL. Once that hurdle was overcome, now I need a WordPress plugin to actually play the stream. It looks like Wonder Audio Player will do the job. I am running the trial right now. Its $49 to purchase the plugin.
The next hurdle is iOS and Android apps, and some sort of format for the station. I would like a Bible in a year program, like Professor Horner’s Bible Reading System, and play that over and over for a few hours in the am and pm. and some other stuff to play as well. If you have ideas, I’d love to hear them!
